Searching Software Setup

  1. Log onto arthur (username lamps)
  2. For a description of how to operate the menu type help menu
  3. Start the menu by typing menu
  4. Abort the previous observations if still running
  5. Go to Set observing parameters
  6. There should be on old parameter file available for most frequencies, so press the Do key and type recall 600search or the appropriate file for your frequency and save the current parameters by pressing the enter key. To see a list of old parameter files, press the Do key and type list. Some examples are given in Sections C.1, C.2 and C.3.
  7. Put a new tape in the tape drive on arthur and make check whether high density is selected or not (compression should be OFF).
  8. Mount the tape by pressing the Do key and typing mount. Give a 3 digit tape number and answer ``y'' to the tape initialisation question.
  9. Set the sample rate and number of channels you require and press the enter key.
  10. You also need to set the sample rate and number of channels in the search box, by opening up the front of it and setting the single bit control switches. The number of channels is set on the TRANS DIP switch.

    equation192

where D1 is given by the binary switches shown in Table 5 (NOTE: bits 7 and 8 are not used). Numbers at the top of the columns are the number of channels.

  11. The sampling interval is set using the 2 data DIP switches.

    equation208

where D2 and D3 are given by the binary switches shown in Table 6 (NOTE: bits 12-16 are not used). Numbers at the top of the columns are the sampling intervals.

  12. If you have not already done so, you should complete Sections 2 to 6.
  13. Observe a bright pulsar to check that everything is working. Use the Display program (Section 9) and the stats and fft options.
