From January 1996 until UMIST ( UMIST website from the web archive) merged with the Victoria University of Manchester in October 2004 (a history of the universities), I was a lecturer and then senior lecturer in the Astrophysics Group in the Department of Physics at UMIST, Manchester, UK. Since then I have been a senior lecturer, reader and now Professor of Astrophysics in the Astronomy and Astrophysics Group in the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics which is a research division in the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manchester.

Prior to coming to Manchester I did my BSc in Physics at Imperial College, London, and my PhD in the Astronomy Department, University of California, Berkeley. While at Berkeley I was also a predoctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I was then a Smithsonian Postdoctoral Fellow at CfA and Jansky Fellow at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, first in Tucson, Arizona and then in Charlottesville, Virginia.
