The Future for Research Careers

We are living in interesting times for the development of research careers. Framework Programme 7 (FP7) will radically impact upon the face of European research; leading research institutes are becoming ever more research – and research income – focused; and changes in student numbers and funding are changing the responsibility for university staff to link research and teaching responsibilities.

Such factors raise issues for the researcher looking to plan their career in turbulent times such as:

• What is the role of mobility and researchers in FP7?

• What are the key researcher-focused issues that need to be addressed?

• What is happening on a national level to support researchers and integrate them into a European job market?

• What are the skills that researchers will have to develop to succeed?

• What will industry expect of researchers coming into work in the private sector?

• How are they looking to develop and exploit their relationships with researchers in the university sector?

This session will begin with an address from Raffaelle Liberali who is Director for the Human Factor, Mobility and Marie Curie activities at the Directorate-General for Research at the European Commission who will over an overview of current developments of a European level.

Panel members include: Louise Ackers - University of Leeds , Dagmar Meyer - Chair of the Marie Curie Association 2003-2005, Janet Metcalfe - Director UK GRAD Programme, Jan Misker - Philips Electronics B.V. and Kate Runeberg - Nordic Council of Ministers.
