Marie Curie Conference (MC2)

Monday 10th April - Wednesday 12th April 2006

Oral Presentation of Papers

I am very pleased that you are coming to Manchester to present your work at MC2. Below you will find a few pointers which will hopefully help you plan your talk and feel confident about presenting at the conference.

Two parallel streams will take place as follows:

M Sessions: Monday 10th April, 15:00-17:00
W Sessions: Wednesday 12th April, 09:00-11:00

Details of which session you have been placed in can be found on the conference web site on this site and will be listed in the copy of the programme in conference packs. Each session last for two hours with papers placed in half hour slots.

The sessions have been organised to enable delegates time to move between sessions without the need to interrupt speakers. As such, you are asked to bear the following timings in mind when preparing your presentation:

To help you, your session chair will give you reminders about time at 5, 3 and 1 minutes before the end of your presentation time. Speakers will present in the order they are listed on the programme so that delegates moving sessions can plan which papers to see.

Each room used for presentations with have a PC attached to a data projector. You are asked to bring your presentation with you as a PowerPoint file on CD or USB memory stick. Note that not all the machines have floppy disc drives.

When you present, you should bear in mind that this conference is a multidisciplinary event. This means that many members of your audience will not be from your field or discipline. As a central theme of the conference is public engagement with science you will provoke better discussion from your audience if you present your work in an accessible manner.

Each session will chaired by and scientist and have a facilitator from the European Commission and a rapporteur. These people may well encourage discussion of your work with a more ‘horizontal’ approach. For example they may ask questions such as:

In order for everyone to get the most out of the event we are encouraging delegates to engage in supportive discussion of papers rather than ‘hard’ questioning. The session chair will work with you in trying to ensure this happens during discussion of your paper.

Your chair may contact you by email before the conference in order to introduce themselves. Please take time to respond to them and send any information they ask for in good time for them to look at before the conference.

I hope this helps you plan your presentation. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate in emailing me at Jason.Rutter@manchester.ac.uk.
