Assignment 3

  1. Make a plot of characteristic age against tex2html_wrap_inline4986 . Do you see a correlation? What is the physical significance of what you see?
  2. Evaluate the stand off distance for the bow shock around PSR B2224+64 assuming tex2html_wrap_inline4988 . What telescope would you use to resolve it?
  3. Why is it difficult to measure timing proper motions for pulsars whose ecliptic latitude is zero? At what 2 times of year would you make interferometric observations to measure the parallax of a radio source with RA = 00:00, DEC 00:00
  4. Calculate the transverse velocities for pulsars that have distances of 100, 500, 1000, 5000, 10000, 50000 parsecs, assuming a proper motion of 10 mas/yr.
