M33 - The Pinwheel Galaxy

Description: The rich centre of M33 is visible here. Because the galaxy is so close to us, it appears very large in the sky. In this image, some of the brighter stars and dust lanes can be picked out near the galaxy's core.

Image information: Stacked, calibrated, registered combination of 85 x 10s unfiltered images and 32 x 10s I, R and V-band images. Post-processing: unsharp mask used to bring out dust lanes, blurring to reduce noise. Image taken 02/02/2007.
