M20 - the Trifid Nebula

Description: M20, the Trifid Nebula, lies in the far south from Keele and is only visible during a few weeks of the summer. The part visible in this image is the emission nebula - a region of ionised hydrogen, enveloped in a dust cloud. The lanes of the dust cloud are visible as dark streaks. The emission nebula is surrounded by a reflection nebula not visible here.
