M15

Description: M15 is a globular cluster, well-known for its lack of `metals' (any element heavier than helium) and unusual central condensation of stars. These images were taken during intermittent cloud and poor seeing, so better ones should be easily attainable.

Image information: Stacked, dark-subtracted, registered combination of 30 x 15s V-band images. The image has undergone a deconvolution filter to enhance clarity. Image taken 14/01/2006 18:15.

Description: These later images show M15 in a more colourful light. The top image is approximately what you would see through a (very) good telescope, as the CCD detector is vastly more sensitive than the naked eye.

The bottom image shows the cluster in redder wavelengths, where the detector is even more sensitive. This also allows us to pick up the cooler, red stars better. The insets on both images have been rescaled for intensity to show the cluster core.

Image information: Stacked, dark-subtracted, registered combination of 20 x 10s C and 10 x 10s B, R, V and I images. Top: RVBC mapped to RGBL, bottom: IRVC mapped to RGBL. Image taken 14/08/2006 22:20 UT.

Description: This image (in infra-red) shows M15 on a night of reasonably good seeing (1.4") but bright moonlight.

Image information: Stacked, dark-subtracted, registered combination of 10 x 10s V, R and I images. IRV mapped to RGB. Image taken 07/09/2006 21:35 UT.

Description: Another image, in better seeing (~1").

Image information: Stacked, dark-subtracted, registered combination of 10 x 10s V, R and I images. IRV mapped to RGB. Image taken 18/10/2007 UT.

Physical information: Magnitude: 6.2, size: 12.3', aka NGC7078.
