M101

Description: M101 is a face-on grand design spiral galaxy near the end of the Plough. It contains a number of bright H II regions (regions of hot gas that are forming stars), including NGC5461 (at the top-right of this image) and NGC5453 (very top at left).

Image information: Stacked, dark-subtracted, registered combination of 72 x 10s unfiltered images. A blurred version of the image has been subtracted to remove sky ramping, although this has resulted in poorer definition of the spiral arms. Images taken on 19/04/2006 22:35 (60exp) and 01/05/2006 21:48 (12 exp).

Description: Another image of the same region.

Image information: Stacked, dark-subtracted, registered combination of 20 x 20s unfiltered images. Light from the full moon has caused a background gradient that has not been removed. Images taken on 04/07/2006.

Description: And another, deeper image.

Image information: Stacked, dark-subtracted, registered combination of 144 x 10s unfiltered images. An unsharp mask has been applied to bring out the arms and HII clouds. Images taken on 09/03/2007. The horizontal lines are due to imperfect bias subtraction, which has been smeared by tracking errors.

Physical information: Magnitude: 8.2, size: 28.5'x28.3', classification: SBc, aka NGC5457, Arp 26.
