M1 - The Crab Nebula

Description: M1 is one of the few supernova remnants (SNR) where the supernova has been seen from Earth. It was recorded by Chinese astronomers in 1056AD. This image has not been flatfielded, hence the bright sky and dark strip at the top of the image. The SNR is the fuzzy blob on the left!

Image information: Stacked, dark-subtracted, registered combination of 20 x 15s V-band images. The image has undergone a deconvolution filter to enhance clarity and a 2x2 binning to reduce noise. Image taken 14/01/2006 22:00.

Description: Here the Crab Nebula is shown in a false-colour image. The red represents infra-red (I-band), green represents red (R-band) and blue represents green (V-band). The diffuse emission from the nebula can be seen in a grey-ish pink, while the hydrogen-alpha-emitting filaments show up in green. The Crab Pulsar is marked by the red markers, and is the upper-left of the central two objects. The purple/yellow feature on the left is a flatfielding error due to moving dust grains on the camera window.

Image information: Stacked, dark-subtracted, flatfielded, registered combination of 50 x 10s images in I, R, V and un-filtered, combined and saturation enhanced (by 50%) in AIP4Win using a RGBL combination. Unsharp masked (r=3, s=100%) in Paint Shop Pro to enhance details. Images taken 02/03/06 20:41-21:39, totalling 33.3 minutes of exposure time.

Description: A clearer images of M1, taken in unfiltered light.

Image information: Stacked, dark-subtracted, registered combination of 100 x 10s unfiltered images. Image taken 10/12/2007 22:30.

Physical information: Magnitude: 8.4, size: 8'x4', aka Crab Nebula.
