Jodrell Bank Development Projects

These pages will give you information about the development projects being undertaken by the engineering groups at Jodrell Bank and their current status.

Radio Frequency Development Labs - Details of the current work of our group into the development of low noise radio astronomy instrumentation.
VSA Receivers - Jodrell is building 14 Cooled Receiver Systems for use in the Very Small Array. This will be located at the Teide Observatory to make observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background.
Multibeam Receiver - The Multibeam Receiver system incorporates 4 feeds and cooled L-Band receivers for use in Hydrogen Line Surveys and Pulsar Search programs.
MkII Multi-Feed System - The MkII telescope is being fitted with a revolver mount to support 4 receiver systems which can be rapidly brought to the focal point of the telescope.
E-Systems Telescope Carousels - The three E-Systems telescopes have been equipped with carousels to allow different receiver systems to be brought into use by remote control.
Resurfacing the Lovell Telescope - Over the years 2001-2002 the Lovell Telescope will be upgraded with a new, higher precision, galvanised steel surface.
The MERLIN Development Correlator - A new Correlator system has been built to enable the hardware and software of the MERLIN Correlator upgrade to be developed.
Power House Automation - A new system of monitoring and control for our standby diesel generators is being installed.
E-System Telescope Drive Systems - The telescope drive systems of these telescopes are being upgraded.
Broad band Fibre-Optic Links - The feasibility of using optical fibres to provide very broad band links for MERLIN and ALMA is being investigated.
