Figure 4. Top: the MERLIN National Radioastronomy Facility operated by the University of Manchester on behalf of PPARC. MERLIN produces radio images whose resolution is similar to, or better than, that of the Hubble Space Telescope in the optical (0.1 arcsec). Bottom: The European VLBI Network (EVN) which operates for up to 12 weeks per year. The UK National Facility contributes telescopes at Jodrell Bank (including the Lovell telescope at wavelengths of 18cm and longer) and Cambridge. The EVN and the full MERLIN operate together to form a single array for several weeks per year, providing images with a resolution of about 10 times higher than that of MERLIN alone.
