3C273

Quasars are distant galaxies with supermassive black holes at their hearts. They were identified in the 1960's, appearing as tiny, but very bright, radio sources in experiments connecting remote telescopes to the giant Mark I telescope at Jodrell Bank. This is a radio image (made with the UK's MERLIN network of telescopes operated from Jodrell Bank) of the famous quasar 3C273 showing a high-speed jet being ejected from the region around the black hole at top left.
