Educational & Interactive Resources

Welcome to the Jodrell Bank Observatory. JBO is part of the University of Manchester's Department of Physics and Astronomy and is home to some of the UK's major astronomical research facilities, including the 76-metre Lovell Telescope, the MERLIN interferometer and VLBI, a global network of radio astronomical observatories.

This Web site, specially designed for National Science Week, will allow you to explore some of the work carried out by astronomers at Jodrell Bank, learn about the advanced techniques of radio astronomy and find out what Jodrell Bank telescopes are doing right now!

Astronomical Observations Explore the telescopes used at Jodrell Bank and other radio observatories around the world, watch each of the Jodrell Bank telescopes in action, calculate the positions of objects in the sky right now and explore the technique of radio interferometry

Image Processing Investigate interactively how radio astronomers form a sharp image of astronomical objects using telescopes separated by many hundreds of miles

Astronomical Data Discover some of the latest interesting results of astronomical research carried out at Jodrell Bank, learn about exciting black-hole candidates, distant energetic galaxies and listen to pulsar signals
