Kim Mance: Telescope Array Controller
I began working at Jodrell Bank in 1992.
I spent several years as an engineering technician, in the Servo Lab, working on telescope control systems and digital circuit board design.
At the end of 2001, I transferred to the Control Room, to join the team of Controllers who are responsible for the operation of all of the telescopes we run from Jodrell Bank.
The Control Room has to be staffed 24 hours a day, every single day of the year, so all Controllers work shifts.
Shifts are nominally eight and a half hours long and run from 08:00 to 16:00, from 16:00 to Midnight and from Midnight to 08:00, with a half hour overlap between shifts.
If they ever find out how much I enjoy this job, I’ll be in real trouble...
